Geometric Meaning: Slope of a Tangent

Secant to Tangent
A secant line cuts a curve at two points, giving an average rate of change. If we move those two points infinitely close to each other, it becomes a Tangent Line, touching only one point and giving the instantaneous rate of change.
The Limit Definition
Mathematically, we shrink the distance (h) between the two points to zero. This is the foundation of the derivative, f'(x):
